AIT Charity

At Several times I have been fortunate to visit the "motherland", but the invitation of the workshop "Designing in the Township" pleased me even more: Discussing the subject of building in the health care sector with my colleagues sounded exciting! And exactly this was the way the journey welcomed me: Experiencing the sunrise over Cape Town at six o´ clock after a long and sleepless flight is a special experience, which puts every uncomfortable seated position in the aeroplane into perspective. Subsequently we visited the architect Fagan, who made his opinion felt that he was far ahead of his time with his design and construction of a residential building fifty years ago. Finally the gigantic building site of the football stadium by gmp at Green Point, which clearly illustrates the importance the Football World Championship 2010 has in South Africa already.

On the second day we started the workshop in Langa. When passing the gates to the Langa Township, the extreme discrepancy between the projects visited earlier and what life´s actual essentials are doesn´t relinquish its hold on me. At that moment real life does not happen in Germany anymore, not in the luxury hotel or building projects worth millions. Right here one is at once brought back down to earth and suddenly anything else appears unimportant and irrelevant. Viewed from the bus, life in the township is very peculiar, because one looks at everything from behind a glass pane. One gets a very insecure feeling when getting off the bus and looking at the living spaces of the poorest like a museum. One doesn´t really want to, because poverty is too palpable and people nevertheless offer a cordial hospitality. One instantaneously has a bad conscience to have light-heartedly enjoyed a bountiful breakfast in the hotel a few minutes ago. Then the workshop commenced. Artist Roderick Saul showed us (who probably last held a linoleum knife in our hands when attending primary school) all possible techniques. And a few minutes later we were armed with our sketchbooks and sitting between children from the township, who wanted to work with us. Initially we looked at each other with side-glances and sympathies could be felt immediately. I was lucky to work with Nokulunga, the only little girl. She was twelve years old, but looked a lot younger. On top of that she was very shy and humble, thought that the pens and paints were awesome, and would have liked to get started at once - maybe hesitant, but right on the ball. It was fun, because she built more confidence with every cut. She acquitted herself well and together we decided, which areas were to be cut away and which ones remained. As a consequence of our joint effort the original design changed:
The previously planned concept was blurred and new forms developed on our "piece of art". But ultimately it was not important that everything was perfect, what really counted was the creativity from the children´s hands! Even a little cut in her thumb could not stop Nokulungo, quite the opposite, minute by minute her enthusiasm grew to complete the task! At the end of the second day we printed the linocuts and tested the paints. Now, the little girl´s eyes were even brighter, because she saw that she liked the result. She was incredibly proud and presented the work to all her friends, she did not want to stop and even forgot to sit down at the lunch table that had been set specifically for us and the children. We printed several variants and she decided for the print with the gayest colours to be her first choice! Away from everyday work, it became clear to me during the workshop that there are boundaries, which are dissolved here in this combined effort. Boundaries between different nations, different ways of life or age groups. No one is more important, no one is able to do more or built higher than the others. The outcome of the works are not criticised, marked or assessed by a jury, but rewarded with a good feeling. It is very important to dissolve these boundaries and I am happy to describe the experiences I made during this journey, although I know that our visit has only been a tiny impulse...
